What To Do If Invisalign Aligners Don’t Fit

Invisalign aligners are a favorite of patients for a variety of reasons, and not the least of them is their comfort. When compared to wires and brackets, sleek clear aligners can be a lot easier to deal with.

At least that’s the case when they fit normally. When they don’t, it can be a little bit frustrating for patients to deal with—if you’re in that situation now, here’s some information you may want to know.

How Are Invisalign Aligners Supposed to Fit?

Before figuring out whether your aligners fit or not, it’s necessary to know what an aligner is really supposed to fit like.

Invisalign aligners are designed to push your teeth into a new position by constricting them, which means that it’s normal—necessary, really—for the aligner to be very tight over your teeth. It’s common for this to be a little uncomfortable for a day or two after getting a new set of trays.

However, your trays also need to contain your teeth when they move into a new position, meaning it’s equally normal for there to be gaps in the aligners.

What Isn’t Typical?

While the above things are normal, there are ways that your aligners can fit that are problematic. At first it may be a little bit troublesome to get the aligner to completely seat on your teeth, especially the back teeth. This should get easier with time, but if you find that either a) it doesn’t get easier, or b) it’s completely impossible to put on your trays, that could be cause for concern.

The opposite is also true—if you find that your aligners are so loose that they fall off easily, especially if there is visible damage to the tray, that may be a sign that it’s broken.

What Should You Do?

If your aligner doesn’t fit, you should call your dentist and explain the situation. In some circumstances, they may ask you to keep wearing the aligners to see if the situation improves, but if the issue seems serious, they’ll probably ask you to wear another tray.

This could be a previous aligner, but usually, they’ll just bump you up to the next stage of trays. If you act quickly, you should be back on track in no time.
