Have you recently been told that you should get your wisdom teeth removed? Are you considering getting them extracted but aren’t sure if you really need to? After all, right now you can’t even see or feel these third molars! Even if they aren’t causing you problems now, wisdom tooth removal might be necessary to protect your smile in the long run. Read on to learn when your final molars would have to be extracted.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final molars that arrive, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. In the past, we may have needed them to gnaw and chew dense food, but nowadays we neither need them nor have space in our mouth anymore. As a result, some people no longer have them, or they tend to get stuck underneath the gum line. To prevent dental issues in the future, wisdom teeth are now normally removed.

Is it Necessary to Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed, but it’s regularly recommended for those with a partially erupted or impacted tooth. Often times, these molars don’t have enough room to grow properly, which can lead to several dental problems. Some of these include:

  • Damage to nearby teeth due to crowdedness, leading to misalignment or bite issues.
  • Cavity formation or gum inflammation because of pockets that easily trap bacteria and are harder to clean.
  • Infection in the jaw, as cysts can grow around these teeth, damaging the nerves.
  • Sinus problems can arise with increased pressure and congestion.

When Should I Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

According to the American Dental Association, your wisdom teeth may need to be removed if your dentist identifies the following signs:

  • Discomfort in the back of the mouth or jaws
  • Damage to nearby teeth
  • Extensive tooth decay
  • Gum Disease
  • Repeated infection of soft tissue behind your wisdom tooth

Even if they aren’t bothering you, you should still have your dentist check your wisdom teeth. Removing them now can save you time, money, and pain in the future!
