Parenthood is truly so beautiful. One minute you’re holding a newborn baby, and the next, you’re suddenly chasing after a wild child! Children grow up right before your eyes – and so does their smile. As your little one matures and their mouth develops, there are a few things you should be aware of regarding their oral health. Read along for five children’s dental facts every parent should know.

Tooth Decay is the Most Common Childhood Disease

Did you know that tooth decay is one of the most prevalent health conditions among children? It’s five times more common than asthma! According to the CDC, more than 42% of children between ages 2 and 11 will have a cavity. If left untreated, dental decay can wreak havoc on your child’s teeth and leave a lasting mark on their smile. It can cause severe oral infections to enter the bloodstream and lead to long-term health problems.

Cavities Are Preventable

Cavities may be one of the most chronic childhood diseases, but they’re easily preventable! Here are a few ways you can ward them off:

  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste and drink fluoridated water
  • Make sure your child follows a proper oral hygiene routine
  • Limit your child’s sugar intake
  • Talk to your dentist about applying dental sealants

Children Can “Catch” Cavities from Their Mother

Studies show that most infant tooth decay cases are caused by the transmission of bacteria from a mother. Blowing on food, sharing utensils, and even kissing can indirectly contribute to the development of cavities. So, if you’re a mother with a newborn baby, make sure you practice good oral care to protect your little one from experiencing dental issues.

First Birthday, First Dental Checkup

Are you a first-time parent? You may be unsure when to take your child in for their first dental visit. It may surprise you to learn that children should have their first checkup by their first birthday, even if their teeth haven’t erupted. Your pediatric dentist will perform an oral evaluation to ensure their baby teeth are growing properly.

Dental Care Starts During Infancy

Instilling healthy habits is critical, especially during infancy. Babies and children under the age of one are at risk of developing oral infections from frequent bottle drinking, meaning their mouths should be cleaned after every feeding or snack. Before the teeth erupt, use an infant toothbrush or soft washcloth to wipe their gums twice a day to remove bacteria. As soon as their first tooth appears, you can start brushing with a rice-sized dab of toothpaste.

There are several things to keep in mind when it comes to your child’s oral health. But remember – proper dental care and healthy habits are guaranteed to help your little one maintain a beautiful, strong smile for life!
