model of dental implantYou probably never expected it to happen to you, but you’ve lost a tooth or two over the years. You’re not alone. 120 million Americans are also missing at least one tooth. Now, there are several options to fill the empty space, but there’s one treatment over 500,000 people are turning to each year. Dental implants are a preferred solution because they replace the entire tooth structure, including the root. As a result, you can enjoy exceptional benefits from a prosthetic that closely looks and feels like your own tooth. Although they can be used to treat all severities of tooth loss, they aren’t right for everyone. Here’s what you need to know to determine if you’re a candidate for dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Traditional dental prosthetics only replace the portion of your tooth visible above the gum line. Although this method is effective, there are some limitations and disadvantages. Dental implants go a step further than conventional treatments to also recreate the root.

A titanium implant post is surgically placed into your jawbone to act as a new root. Your bone fuses to the post to support your restoration, which is attached to the post using an abutment. You’ll enjoy a solution that replicates your natural tooth while also having the potential to last for a lifetime.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

No matter if you’re missing one tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire arch, you might be a candidate for dental implants. Generally, if you have good oral and general health, you can get dental implants; however, your dentist will also need to discuss your medical and lifestyle history. They will review a CT scan as well to look for any issues beneath the surface that can lead to implant failure, like infection or bone loss. If your dentist finds infection or bone loss, you can become a candidate for dental implants with additional treatments, such as:

  • Periodontal Therapy: Although gum disease is preventable, it’s a leading cause of tooth loss. Since it destroys the supporting structures for your teeth, you can’t get dental implants if the infection is active. You can become a candidate for them with periodontal therapy. After the infection is treated, you can move on to your placement surgery.
  • Bone Grafting: Periodontal disease or untreated tooth loss can cause low bone density in your jaw. If there isn’t enough bone, your jaw won’t be able to support your implant posts. Bone grafting thickens your jaw to ensure your implants have the strong foundation they need to thrive.
